Typické jídlo k Americe prostě patří.. Tomu se prostě těžko vyhnete.
A protože Danův tatínek má jako já rád sladké, dostala jsem ochutnat poměrně dost léty prověřených amerických sladkostí.. (což vlastně není tak těžké, když se to tu jí stále, žejo!)
Nicméně, Texas máte skoro u Mexika, a navíc jižní Texas, kde jsme pobývali, se prostě hemží Mexikány. Podle Dana je ale Texasani berou asi tak, jako my tady Ukrajince (takže nemají žádnou skvělou pověst). Avšak, mě je to nějak jedno, protože na Mexiku mě hlavně zajímá.. jejich jídlo! Miluji mexický jídlo. A protože v jižním Texasu najdete dost Mexičanů, logicky tu najdete i dost dobrých mexických restaurací.. (ňam)
American food is just American food. You cannot really avoid it!
And, because Daniel's dad is really into sweet (so am I), I got to try a lot of American sweet stuff.. (haha, I know, that is not so difficult there). However, Texas is pretty close to Mexico, and South Texas is even closer.. thus you find many Mexicans there. According to Daniel, Texans consider Mexicans in Texas similarly as Czechs consider Ukraines in Czech Republic. (so not really nice reputation). Nevertheless, I do not care so much, because the main attraction for me is.. Mexican cuisine! I love Mexican cuisine. And so, because many Mexicans live in South Texas, therefore you logically can find there many great Mexican restaurants.. (yummy)

Turtles s pekanovými ořechy
Tohle je tutovka. Pekan je texaský národní ořech, prostě má podobnou chuť i věhlas asi jako takový vlašský oříšek v Česku, jen trochu podlouhlý a tmavší. A želvičky jsou čokoládové bonbény plněná tekutým karamelem s pekanovými ořechy. Ňam.
Turtles with pecans
Pecan is kind of state nut in Texas, it has particulary same fame and similar taste as walnut in Czech Republic. Pecan is just a little bit darker and stretched. And turtle is a chocolate filled with liquid caramel and pieces of pecans. Yummy.
Blue Bell vanilková
Blue Bell vanilková je nejlepší zmrzlina na světě. Je taky texaská, a když ji ochutnáte, nebudete mít na jazyku pouze vanilkovou zvodnatělou zmrzku z kelímku. Tohle začne vanilkou, pokračuje nádechem karamelu a dozní chutí pekanových oříšků. Jste té chuti tak plní, že ani nevíte, co si z toho odnýst! Proto si musíte dát další lžičku Blue Bellu. A další. A pak sníte celý megakelímek.. Vlastně kbelík. A Blue Bell je tak dobrá, že si ji musí každý večer! dát i pes Danových rodičů. Když nedostane večerní příděl modrýho zvonečku, tak je naštvaný. Vlastně se mu nedivím.
Blue Bell homemade Vanilla
Blue Bell is the best icecream in the world. It is a Texan icecream, and when you try it, you will not get only the shallow, watery taste on your tongue. Blue Bell starts with a real vanilla taste, goes on with tinge of caramel and finishes with the gentle taste of pecans, I was just so full of the taste so I could not point which taste really prevailed! Thus I got next spoon of icecream. And next one. And then you end up finishing whole bucket. And Blue Bell is so good so Daniel's parent's dog has to get little small package every! evening. If he does not get it, he is angry. I am actually not surprised at all. I would be too!

Dr. Pepper
V Texasu se nepije Coca-Cola, ale doktor Pepr (aka to, co pil Forrest Gump na návštěvě u prezidenta). Je to taková kola s příchutí žvýkačky, a navíc je echt pravá texaská. Tudíž v Texasu pijete pořád Dr. Peppera. Což je samozřejmě super, protože chutná fakt dobře (líp než Coca-Cola, ale jestli líp než Kofola,, to se těžko říká, nechci být za vlastizrádce). A navíc, i v letadle Houston-Dallas, popřípadě Dallas-Londýn vám stále nabídnou Dr. Peppera. Samozřejmě s ledem. V Texasu je všechno s ledem.
Dr. Pepper
Texans do not drink Coca-Cola but Dr. Pepper (the coke Forrest Gump was drinking during the visit in White House). It is just a coke with a taste of pink chewing gum, and it is a true Texan coke. Therefore during Texas visit you drink only Dr. Pepper. I like that because it just tastes so goood (better than Coca-Cola for sure, but if better than Kofola (Czech coke).. I am not so sure about that and I do not want to be unpatriotic!! haha). Moreover, you still can get Dr. Pepper on the flight from Houston to Dallas or even from Dallas to London! Of course with ice. In Texas you get everything with ice.

Ice tea
Jako ice tea si v Česku představím sladký předražený Nestea. Tak to ale není případ ice tea v Texasu. Ice tea je možná jediná věc, která v Texasu v porovnání s ČR nebyla sladší. Ice tea je zde prostě ledový čaj, a vážně chutná jako ledový černý čaj bez cukru. K tomu samozřejmě citrón a nekonečně mnoho ledu. Kdybyste měli zájem o sladší verzi, prostě si ho dosladíte cukřenkou na stole. A k ice tea se váže další věc - v každé restauraci máte nekonečně mnoho ice tea. Objednáte si jeden za 80 centů, a pak kdykoliv máte třeba i jen půl sklenice upito, přijde číšník a automaticky vám dolije. Třeba desetkrát. Ale platíte jen jednou. Takže si nemusíte v restauraci šetřit pití, protože je přece tak drahý - tady se vážně můžete napít, když jíte. Což je fajn.
Ice tea
In Czech Republic, as ice tea I can imagine crazy sweet, overpriced Nestea (brand of ice tea sold in Czech Republic). That is not a case of ice tea in Texas, and moreover, ice tea was probably the only thing that was not sweeter in Texas in comparison with Czech Republic! Ice tea just really tastes as a really cold black tea without sugar. And you get a lemon and exorbitant amount of ice. If you still wanted a sweeter ice tea, you can just add a sugar sitting on every table. Next nice thing about ice tea is its never-ending: in every restaurant you pay for one ice tea (80 cents) and then, if you are even in the middle of your glass, waiter just comes and fills up your glass again. And then next ten times. And you pay once. So you do not have to stress out about not drinking during eating, because the drinks are so expensive. In Texas you can really drink during your meal. And that is awesome.

Donuty
To, čemu se v Evropě říká donut, mi teď přijde opravdu legrační. První americký donut byl docela šok. Zaprvé, je hrozně měkký, ale na povrchu trošičku křupavý, nebo prostě trochu tužší. A když se do něj zakousnete.. Je opravdu hrozně měkoučký, nadýchaný a samozřejmě dost sladký. Víc jak dva za sebou nedáte. A ty příchutě - čokoládový s kokosem, s javorovým sirupem, prostě skořicový, který je opravdu HODNĚ skořicový.. A nejlepší měli v jednom mexickém pekařství (Mexičani umí i jiné věci než nachos se salsou!) a také v Shipley's Donuts, kde jsme krom jiného ještě v sobotu před odletem stihli snídani. Yummy.
Donuts
What we call donut in Europe is just nothing in comparison with the American donut. First one just shocked me. It was just really soft, sweet and just tasted different. I ended up with two in the row - I could not eat more because I just felt so full and overdonuted (a new verb by me!!). And the different flavours.. chocolate with coconut, pecans, with maple syrup, cinnamon one which is REALLY cinnamon.. and the best ones were in one Mexican bakery (Mexicans can cook also different things than chips and salsa!) and in Shipley's Donuts, where we managed to get our last Texas breakfast on Saturday. Yummy.

Pizza tu není 'hubená', ale spíš taková buchtoidní. Na pizzo-buchto-těstě máte megavrstvu sýra (opravdu HODNĚ sýra) a pak další věci. Já jsem měla vegetariánskou, což znamenalo megavrstvu sýra s olivami a paprikami. Trochu divná, ale vlastně mi fakt chutnala.
Pizza
Pizza is not thin in Texas but much thicker and maybe more similar to Czech dumpling. On this you get a LOT of cheese and next stuff. Me and Daniel got vegetarian pizza and that was a LOT of cheese and olives and green peppers. A little bit strange, but I quite felt in love with American pizza.

Aneb mexická limonáda. V Texasu jí pije jak kdo, protože to je 'mexický šunt'. V Praze seženete půllitrovou lahvičku za 50kč a více. V Texasu za 57 centů, což je tak 13kč. Prostě sranda. Nicméně, mě hrozně chutná. Taky je cítit po žvejkačce.

Mexican limonade. Pretty much just some Texans drink it, because some consider it as a 'Mexican mess'. In Prague you get half liter bottle for 50 crowns or more (=2 dollars or more). In Texas we got it for 57 cents, so pretty much 13 crowns. Just funny. However, I love it, and it also tastes as chewing gum.
Chipsy a salsa
Chipsy nejsou v Texasu normální brambůrky, ale kukuřičný trojuhelníčky, nachosky. A scénář pro milovníky nachos je následující: sednete si do mexické restaurace. Ještě, než si vůbec objednáte pití, přinese vám servírka velkou mísu chipsů a misku (či dvě) salsy. A když ji sníte, přinese další. Nebo stačí, že jste v půlce, a přinese další. A další. A kolik chcete. A nejlepší na tom je, že chips and salsa jsou na účet podniku.
Chips and salsa
Chips are not the same in Texas as in Czech Republic. In Texas, chips mean corn triangles, so pretty much nachos. And the perfect screenplay for nachos lovers: you get a seat in Mexican restaurant. Before ordering even a drink, waitress brings you a huge bowl of chips. And one or two salsa. When you are finished with this bowl, she brings a new one. Or you have eaten half and she brings new bowl again. And next bowl. And how much you can eat. And the ebst thing is that chips and salsa are for free.

Jestli znáte pražské Burrito Loco, tak si prostě představte něco podobnýho, ale s chips and salsa zadarmo, nekonečným ice tea, třikrát lepším a i větším jídlem, milionkrát lepší salsou, milým číšníkem a nekonečným množství zmrzliny při odchodu zadarmo (i když ta je už vám skoro k ničemu, protože jste tak plní, že více než jeden kornoutek nesníte!). Nevím, jestli se mi po nějaké restauraci bude stýskat tak jako po Jimmy Changas, kde tohle všechno měli.

If you know Burrito Loco in Prague, just imagine something similar.. with chips and salsa for free, never-ending ice tea, three times better and bigger food, milion times better salsa, friendly waiter and free icecream when leaving.. (eventhough you cannot really get that much icecream; you are so full so one icecream is pretty much sufficient!) I guess from all the restaurants I miss the most Jimmy Changas where we got all of this..

Dovednosti Danovy rodiny
Babička nám uvařila krocana a další součásti Thanksgiving slavnostního jídla (fazole v takový smetanový omáčce, nádivka se zeleninou, gravy omáčka, bramborová kaše), protože jí 'Dan moc chyběl při posledním Thanksgivingu, tak mu to chtěla vynahradit aspoň teď.' No ale bylo to moc dobré! Teď nevím, jestli mi chutná víc Danova verze, kterou nám vařil, a nebo ta babičky! Danův táta je taky super kuchař. Měli jsme Chili, což je také jedno z texaských národních jídel a každý ho prý dělá jinak. Je to vlastně mleté maso a fazole a skvělé koření.. A taky snídaňové burrito, omeleta s chili, americké pancakes se sirupem..
Daniel's family skills
Grandma cooked turkey and whole Thanksgiving dinner, because she had missed Daniel so much during Thanksgiving so she had decided to make it up now! And it was great, and I am on doubts deciding if her or Daniel's version (he cooked Thanksgiving dinner already twice for me and my family) was better! But they are both wonderful cooks as Daniel's dad. He cooked great Chili, with meat and beans.. Everybody in Texas cookes different version but I really liked this one! And then dad's breakfast burrito, omelet with chili, pancakes with syrup..
Bonfire jídlo
Aka jídlo u táboráku. V Česku si dáte buřta a možná opečete brambory přes noc v popelu. V Texasu jsme ale opravdu opékali typické marshmallows. Já tedy jen tak zlehka, do hněda, ale ostatní se toho nebáli, strčili marshmallow do hlubin plamenů, a za pět až deset sekund vytáhli černou, nabobtnalou, hýbající se věc, kterou si prostě snědli. Vlastně nebylo překvapením, když někomu marshmallow hořel (pak se stejně snědl). Nicméně, maršmeloun byl jenom začátek. Recept pro inovátory českých táboráků či milovníky nových chutí: opečte si maršmelouna (nějakýho fakt velkýho, a černá barva po opečení nepředstavuje žádný problém), připlácněte na krekrovou sušenku (takový obdélníkový Bebečko je dostačující), na to dejte pár čtverečků čokolády, připlácněte druhou krekrou a ólala, nejlepší táborákovej sendvič je na světě!
Bonfire food
In Czech Republic, during an evening bonfire you eat a short fat sausage ('buřt') and maybe leave few potatoes in ash till morning to bake them. In Texas the main thing were the marshmallows. I just baked them a bit, to make them a little bit brown, however, the others were not so afraid: they put the marshmallow in the deep fire and in five to ten seconds they pulled the stick back, having something black, moving, with bubbles on the end of it. And they just ate it. Easy! It was actually not surprising if somebody's marshmallow got on fire, because then you ate it anyway. Nevertheless, that was just start of something great - a recipe for Czech bonfire inovators or for lovers of new tastes: bake you marshmallow (rather big one), put it on some biscuit, put a bit of chocolate on it and then next bisquit - and olala, great bonfire sandwich!
Root Beer
To není pivo, ale zase něco sladkého. Trochu mi to připomíná Dr. Peppera, taky to má žvýkačkový nádech, ale je to o něco sladší.. Taková fajn limonáda k táboráku nebo ke sledování televize a primárek.

That is not a beer but something sweet again. It reminds me Dr. Pepper a bit, because you can get this similar chewing gum taste.. but Root Beer is sweeter. Just a nice limonade for watching TV or sitting next to a bonfire.
Popravdě, po týdnu jsem se začala bát, abych nedostala nějaký cukrovkový záchvat. Denní příděl zmrzliny se začínal stávat povinností (když došla dva dny před odjezdem Blue Bell, tak mě to dost trápilo, ale sníst kelímek na večeři pro psa jsem si dovolit nemohla), uždibování čokolády a maršmelounů taktéž, zkoušela jsem si i osladit icetea ale to nebylo úplně ono, a taky sladké Jarrito a Root Beer a Dr. Pepper... Prostě sladké orgie, i když i slaná jídla Texasu mě vzali za srdce, takže jsem to přece 'vyvažovala'.
Plánovala jsem kratší článek, ale jak se vyjádřit stručně o něčem, díky čemu (mimo jiné!) je Amerika slavná? A věděli jste, že Texas je nejtlustším státem USA? K tomu bych, myslím, po delší strávené době v Texasu přispěla i já, haha! Tentokrát jsem ale za týden přibrala jen jednu libru, a to si asi odpustím (cca 0,5kg).
Tak jezte všichni zdravě a berte si příklad z někoho jiného!

Honestly, after a week I started being scared from some diabetese attack. I got pretty much used to eating icecream every day (when we ran out of Blue Bell two days before our departure I was quite sad.. however, I could not afford to eat the little portion for Dusty dog!!), also to having a little chocolate or marshmallow time to time.. I also tried to sweeten my ice tea but it did not taste very well, but sweet Jarrito and Root Beer and Dr. Pepper.. Just a sweet heaven, but of course I loved the salt food of Texas too, so yeah it was pretty much balanced!
I was planning a short article, but how can you write shortly about something that is so significant for American culture? And did you know that Texas is the most obese state in the US? After some period of time I am sure I could contribute to this statistics too, haha! But actually, I gained just one pound during our stay, and I guess I am completely fine with that (about 0.5kg).
So all of you eat healthy and take somebody else as an example!
